SOUTH OKANAGAN SIMILKAMEEN RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PROGRAM

If you have 30 discretionary hours annually and are looking for a practical way to get involved and contribute to your community’s safety and wellness, we are actively recruiting individuals that are interested in becoming volunteer facilitators in the Restorative Justice Program.

Restorative justice is a theory of justice that emphasizes repairing the harm caused by criminal behavior.  It is a process whereby all the parties with a stake in a particular offence come together to resolve collectively how to deal with the aftermath of the offence and its implications for the future. This can lead to transformation of people, relationships, and communities.

Facilitator training will take place on Friday, March 2, 5:00 pm – 8:30 pm and Saturday, March 3rd, 9:30 am – 3:00 pm, at the Similkameen Elementary Secondary School (SESS) Library.

For more information contact:

Terri Kalaski - terri.kalaski@rcmp-grc.gc.ca or phone: 250.770.4752.  Space is limited to ten.

SNOW REMOVAL

It’s that time again and we would like to remind residents of winter snow removal regulations.

The Village has a snow removal schedule that is based on a road priority system. Sanding and plowing begins on the main arterial roads, followed by collector roads, and then moves onto residential streets and lanes as necessary. For more details follow this link Street Snow Removal

Please assist our crew when they are plowing by not parking on streets during snow removal.

During snow removal operations, plow operators cannot avoid leaving ridges of snow (windrows) at the foot of driveways. Residents and business owners are responsible for clearing the windrow from their own driveways and entrances. Please, do not shovel snow from driveways or walkways into the street. This can cause safety issues if a vehicle hits the accumulation of snow and ice and loses control.
For more information follow this link Snow Clearing Bylaw No. 605

Enjoy the winter and thank you for your cooperation!

Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay / Sign-up for Relay via online contest

25 years after his Man In Motion World Tour, and in preparation for his 25th Anniversary Relay which will re-create the Canadian-portion of his original Tour, Rick Hansen is looking for residents of the Village of Keremeos and area to help cover the 12,000 kilometer trek across Canada. One man in motion will be represented and celebrated by many in motion; as 7,000 participants from across Canada who have made their own difference in the lives of others will walk, wheel or run in the Rick Hansen Relay when it begins on August 24, 2011 in Cape Spear, Newfoundland and Labrador and concludes on May 22, 2012 in Vancouver, British Columbia. The 25th Anniversary Relay is planned to pass through Cawston and Keremeos in the Spring of 2012

To find and recognize these participants, the Rick Hansen Foundation launched an online public contest at RickHansenRelay.com, allowing Canadians to enter to win a spot for themselves or nominate a worthy individual to participate in the Relay as a Medal-Bearer.

“Today is an exciting day in our 25th Anniversary celebration and for Canadians across the country, as we connect the nation and provide the opportunity for people who are making a difference in the lives of others to be recognized for their accomplishments and to share their stories,” said Rick Hansen, President and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation. “This is the start of a movement for 7,000 Canadians to help inspire the nation and live by the credo that anything is possible.”

As part of the Relay, residents of the Village of Keremeos and area can enter the online contest to participate in the Relay. To tell the story of Canada’s difference makers, the online contest is open to: individuals who are creating a more accessible and inclusive world, youth-leaders who are encouraging their generation to embrace positive change, persons who are protecting the environment or any Canadian who is seeking ways to improve the lives of others. While Hansen will not be wheeling across the entire country as he did 25 years ago, he will be present at a number of stops throughout the country during the nine month 25th Anniversary Relay.

ATTENTION DOG OWNERS

Should your dog be impounded for being off your private property, a notice and a picture of your dog will be posted on the front entry window of the Village Office for 72 hours.

If the dog has a current dog tag the owner will be contacted to pay the fines and claim the dog.If the dog does not have a current dog tag it will be taken to the impound yard in Penticton.  Dog owners have 72 hours to claim their dog from the impound yard.  After the 72 hours have expired all unclaimed dogs become the property of the impound yard.  Dog owners must pay all fines at the Village Office PRIOR TO retrieving their dog from the impound yard.

Please check the Village office front entry window or phone 250-499-2711 if your dog goes missing.  We may be able to help you reconnect with your pet.
